About Me

Hi, my name is Haley and I’m addicted to food.

Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by how a person could take ordinary ingredients and, with a little bit of knowhow, make extraordinary things. I remember sneaking up really early in the morning to fix my parents breakfast, thinking how proud they would be of me. Poor Daddy drank that buttermilk-chocolate-banana shake with sprinkles, which is a testament not only to my willingness to experiment on those I love, but also to the depth of my father’s affection.

Since college, I’ve discovered a deep need to play Suzie Homemaker in the kitchen while still expressing my flair for the creative. I have been called a kitchen witch because I simply “sense” what things would go good together and take it from there, sans recipe. A dash of this, a pinch of that and, oh, did you know that the ancients believed blah blah blah about such-and-such? Maybe my history degree isn’t so useless after all.

My qualifications to tell you what to do in the kitchen include five years of Home Ec. and a semester of Food Sciences in college. Just don’t ask me about the green blueberry muffins. I pour over every cookbook my family and the local library will loan me, purchase quite a few quarterly, and always have Food Network on as background noise.

Between meals, I search for a use for my other degree in a world that scorns print journalism, all while taking care of two cats, my parents and a husband. I also run a rather unsuccessful blog and have an on-again/off-again affair with webcomicing.
